UFO Over Miami, FL 3/23/08

Friday, April 4th, 2008

While trawling through the recent UFO reports in MUFON’s database, I came across this video of a UFO seen over Miami, Florida on 3/23. While there is not much detail in the video and there is definitely a lot of air traffic over Miami (both legal and illegal), I feel this video may have some merit and deserves to at least be investigated further:

From the report to MUFON:

I stepped outside and noticed a very large orange glow to my left.
I saw this “acorn-shaped” object growing in size- hovering over the rooftops. It was transparent on the bottom half. I ran inside and grabbed my Sony HandyCam Hi8– and yelled for my girlfriend to come see. By the time I started filming, it was already moving away and shrinking.

Additionally, a commenter on the YouTube page claimed to have seen the same or similar craft much further to the south somewhere in the Caribbean on the same night.

The lack of any strobe or marker lights in the video, lead me to believe that this is not video of an aircraft. There are what appear to be stars in the background at one point in the video as well as a brief clip of a railing of some sort as the cameraman lowers camera after the object disappears. Unfortunately, the poor low light performance of the camera leaves us with very little detail in the clip to give us any clues to the objects altitude, location or size. Despite these shortcomings, I believe this is a valid video of an object in the sky that is not an aircraft following civil aviation regulations and may very well be some sort of unknown craft. What you believe, is up to you. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Update to our UFO Activity Monitor

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Some of you may have noticed that our UFO Activity Monitor has moved from its previous home up at the top of the page to new digs in the sidebar. Along with the move, the Activity Monitor has received a minor re-tooling. We have simplified the system down to 4 levels indicated by a colored dot and a text label (as seen to the right). Instead of the previous 6 possible levels of UFO activity, we now have Low, Average, High and Contact.

Low (blue) now indicates activity at least one order of magnitude below the 10 year reporting average.

Average (green) indicates activity within +/- one order of magnitude of the statistical average.

High (orange) represents activity at least one order of magnitude above average.

Contact (red) represents the most exciting level of UFO activity. It represents public UFO sighings/landings being reported by the mass media (think UFO lands in Times Square, at the White House, etc).

For a peek at all the level graphics, check out the About Page for our UFO Activity Monitor.

Clues to past UFO visitation hidden in works of art?

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Many people believe that UFO visitation is by no means a recent phenomena. Some point to the Bible and other historical documents as containing clues to the presence of UFOs in the past In fact there are numerous references to flying chariots in the Bible and in the parlance of time “chariot” simply meant a means of conveyance not the ancient vehicle we think of today, making biblical UFOs a real possibility. Perhaps the best clues that our ancestors witnessed the same phenomena we see in our skies today is in their art.

One famous example is “the Madonna and Saint Giovannio” a 15th century painting generally attributed to an artist at the school of Filippo Lippi where, what we would call a UFO, can be clearly seen over the Madonna’s left shoulder (pictured above). XFacts has an excellent listing of similar instances of UFOs appearing in art dating back as far as 12th century and beyond (and where most of these works can be seen today). At first glance (especially if you are looking at only one image) it is easy to dismiss the “UFOs” as the result of the paintings being incorrectly interpreted with modern eye, but when you look at the consistency of how these “unidentified painted objects” are depicted it makes you wonder what these artist from different times and cultures saw that influenced them to include these objects in their art. Take a look for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments.
